Why do my Nepali friends always ask me this first and how do I respond? My phone rings and it is my Nepali friend calling. I answer, "Hello?" "Hi, where are you?" I'm always stumped by this. "Uh, I'm driving," I respond and try to figure out where I am at that exact moment. Is this like the English version of "Hi, how are you?" English speakers often say this without thinking or really waiting for an answer. It is just a formality in our language. So is this the same in the Nepalese culture, and how do I respond to this?

A good one. Possible responses : 1. I am playing football. Do you want to join ?.... 2. I am in my house. I am not feeling fine today. .... 3. I am in school. I will call you after some hours.... 4. I am wasting my time on Facebook. Do you want to hang out ? ... So, the caller is probably interested to know about your plans or it can also simply mean (so what's up? ).
