Just a few examples. The first European settlements in California were Spanish missions founded by priests. California has a large Hispanic population and a strong Hispanic heritage. For example, a major highway in California is named the "Camino Real," a Spanish name. California also has a large Asian population and an Asian cultural heritage because of its location on the west coast. Settlement of the U.S. begin on the East Coast, and this region is older than the rest of the United States. The states of the Northeast in particular were dominant in finance and economy, even into the 1950s. In the early 1900s, the Northeast tended to dominate in culture (symphony orchestras), education, and social standing. Louisiana has a French heritage and a different system of state law from any of the other 49 states. The state of Utah was founded by a religious group, the Latter-Day Saints or Mormons. The Mormons began in New York State in the 1820s, but the group suffered persecution and moved west. The state of Utah is strongly influenced by Mormonism, and while Mormons are found in every state (and throughout the world) they are concentrated in Utah. The United States is full of ethnic enclaves, local populations that were founded by immigrants from one place or another and have maintained a sense of tradition and culture, which can sometimes be seen in place names. Just to name one, a Swiss enclave in New Glarus, Wisconsin. To name another, a large number of Russian emigres in Brookline and Newton, Massachusetts, many of whom came there in the 1990s.
