남자친구 can be both male friend and boyfriend.
However, we(Koreans) don't normally say "남자친구" if the friend is just a friend who is a male.
So..to answer your question a male friend is usually called "친구"
The same for a female friend "친구"

Funny thing is we nomally used ^애인^ for lover some decades ago. But people started to use "남자친구" or "여자친구" I think "boyfriend n girlfriend" in english influenced this changes in Korea. So nomally Say "친구인데 남자야"(friend. it is male) . There isnt any other option i think. so if you say "남자친구" it is a lover"
