How would you ask this in Spanish? I am leading a language exchange group tonight. I want to ask everyone the following question, but in Spanish: "Is there a story behind your name? What is it?" How would you ask this in natural Spanish? Here is my attempt, although I'm sure there must be something wrong with it: "¿Hay una historia de porque tienes tu nombre? ¿Qué es?¨ Your help would be appreciated!!!

Hola Alaric! All the expressions that Martín, Héctor and Ramón told you are correct. If you want a more literal translation, you can also say: "¿Hay alguna historia detrás de tu nombre? ¿Cuál es?". Hope this helps! :)

Si vas a hablar con personas que no conoces mucho, lo mejor es utilizar un lenguaje algo más formal. (If you don't know very much the people who you are going to speak, it'd better use formal expressions). Por ejemplo: ¿Por qué te pusieron ese nombre? ¿has investigado algo sobre su origen? Si pudieras cambiarte el nombre ¿Cuál elegirías? Un saludo y suerte con el grupo. I am sorry for my bad English.
