Yes, ~해 보이다 can be used for oneself.
Ex. 저 요즘 뚱뚱해 보여서 이제 운동 좀 하려고요.
= I think I look fatty these days so I'm planning to workout soon.
저는 무서워 보여서 불량배들도 안 건드려요. 
= Because I look scary, even naughty people don't pick a fight with me.
내가 겁먹은것처럼 보이니까 그 꼬마가 내 손을 잡아줬어.
= The kid grabbed my hand because I looked scared.
