Get yourself a textbook, lots of people recommend the penguin Russian course, but I would prefer to get one with accompanying audio so that you can learn how things sound. In fact start listening to Russian audio, even if you don't understand so that you can start getting used to the sounds of the language. Internet radio or any other source is fine for that. There are also some good online lessons here: http://learnrussian.rt.com. I would say that although you will need to do most of your study on your own, getting a teacher to guide you in your progress and to correct things you get wrong is essential. Of course italki is a great place to find a good teacher. Also remember that you need to do the activities you like doing, and use resources that you like. Sustaining your motivation is the only way to success, and so with some help you must find your own route to success. Good luck with your studies, you will love learning Russian!

This is the best collecetion of Resources for learning Russian I have ever found on the internet: http://www.fluentin3months.com/forum/resources-2/resources-for-learning-russian-revised-list/#p11462 And I agree, if you decide to go for a text book, chose one with audio. One of the bigger problems when learning Russian is the pronounciation. You cannot start early enough to get a grip on it. I personally am not crazy about just working with text books, I find it a bit dull in the long run and difficult to bring myself to doing the repetition. I love working with memrise.com and duolingo.com for example or with Russian films with Russian subtitles (see list). I would also advice to speak from day one. Find somebody on italki and just get a skype session or something like that. It doesn't matter if you can't get beyond "Hello, my name is..." at first. The great thing about it is, that you will build you own vocabulary, like no book or programm ever can, and concentrating on words and phrases you really need when talking to somebody. Okay, I sound now as if I knew, what I am talking about, but to be honest, I am a newbie to this all as well. I just noticed, that motivation and fun play a massive rule in sticking to a language, so you will have to find the methods that are best for you. Have fun!
