"~죠" is kind of an abbreviation of "~지요", which is a final ending of a sentence. For example, I am a student. 저는 학생이지요. On the contrary, "~고" is a connective ending, which is used for connecting two sentences. For example, I am a student, and she is a teacher. 저는 학생이고, 그녀는 선생님이지요. (a super late answer from a passerby)
