Well, how good are you in English? If you are good, I can recommend a lot of books for teachers. There are many ideas and methods to encourage students to study and work independently. The best way is to teach them things that would improve their language. For example, I would encourage my students to find English speakers in their regions, have a pen pal, find language partners, listen to music, watch movies/TV shows, etc. In the end, it depends on the students themselves. I for one, am not able to study and work independently, if I'm not in a social environment I suffer, holding a book really put me to sleep no matter how good or how badly I want to read it, however, if I'm watching a lesson, or hearing someone reading the book I learn better, I also learn much better if I tried the language I've learned with someone rather than repeating it on my own. This is just me, like I said, it's different from one person to another, I'm sure others would give you different, even better answers than mine :) Good luck and have fun :)
