It's about Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). They used a fax once and then switched to the modern way of interchange with PC, network and corresponding software. So it became fully automated without the need for a manual confirmation by using a fax.

Alexander's answer is correct. I would just add that the use of modems and faxes has now evolved to include email and using the Internet to exchange information between suppliers. Other more exotic communication methods exist including ISDN and T1 connections. More information on "EDI" can be found by google.com or wikipedia.org.
