Do The People In The Philippine City San Pedro Cutud Really Crucify Themself? Years ago, I have read a small article about the Philippines. Every year in the city of San Pedro Cutud, the people torture and crucify themself for remembering Jesus. I now would like to know if the people just do it like in a theatrical show, or if they really crucify themself and die there? I have heard the catholic Phillipine church is against this ceremony but nevertheless, the people do it. It sounds horrible to me and I just would like to know, if they really do it in a fanatical way and people die during this ceremony or if they just play and fake it and nobody gets hurt? I know it is a hard question, but I always wondered if they are going this far there from what I have read.

Yes, they do happen on Good Friday in Pampanga, one of the Philippine provinces. The crucifixions are for real - the palms are impaled with real nails. For the ones who get it done on them, it's intended to serve as atonement for their sins. Curiously, some undergo it repeatedly over the years. For the spectators who are daring enough to watch the event live, each may have his/her own reason for being there. I don't know for how long they stay crucified, but I don't think anyone has died in the process. I suppose they undergo some medical treatment for their wounds after.
