One of the most well known french band is Noir Desir, a rock band. I've discovered another french band recently named Hocus Pocus. Their music is kinda funky and jazzy at the same time, and the lyrics are rapped in french, or sung in english. Then there is Shaka Ponk, though they don't sing in french at all if I'm not wrong.

Check out Notre Dame de Paris, it's a musical, and all of its songs are epic. I've been trying to find French bands that match my music taste, which is, hard rock, metal and all that, but it's really hard to find this type in French, or maybe I just didn't look hard enough. Anyways, this musical is the only thing that satisfied me. The best songs are "Le Temps des Cathédrales", "Belle", "Les Sans-Papiers", "Tu Vas Me Détruire" and "L'enfant Trouvé". Check them out.
