"Conoscere" si traduce ad esempio anche con "to experience" (fare esperienza di), "to learn" (apprendere). "Sapere" si traduce invece con "to be able to" (essere in grado di/ essere capace di), "to be educated" (essere istruito), "to be cultivated" (essere preparato), "to be aware" (essere a conoscenza).

Just to throw my hat into the ring... yes, it's a little confusing because both words translate into English as "to know". "Sapere" is about having the information in your mind. The same as knowing facts. "Conoscere" is about being familiar with something (so it's normally used in relation to people). You know a person well.

When you use conoscere it can be used for a subject ( a person or a subject of study) whereas sapere is used in connection with an information or something lilke that.
