How important is Chinese Mandarin in the world today ?

The fact that it is the official language of the world's most populous nation makes it important. I don't think it is important linguistically, and the fact that written Chinese has no alphabet always represents a barrier. Even Korea Vietnam Thailand and Japan have introduced phonetic alphabets.
