What's the difference between a foray and a raid?

They essentially mean the same thing, though foray is much less commonly used. I can't think of an instance where they aren't interchangeable.

In the context of military action, a raid and foray are basically the same thing -- a sudden attack. However, the use of the word "foray" suggests that the action was short-lived [lasted only a short time].
