I've searched plenty of dictionaries and other sources online for how this works and I still don't really get how it changes the sentence Examples- 「ただ頑なな枷を解き放つ鍵を求め続ける」「ただそばにいて」「ただ見ているだけです」

Dictionary says “simply, merely, purely”. For me, “just / just only” or “nothing but” sound right in most of the time. 1. nothing but keep on seeking the key to get (it) relieved. 2. just be there. 3. just watching. Anyways, ただ emphasize the singularity of the action to do or to be done.
