Here is a sentence I don't understand "She allowed herself a portly smirk in the mirror at the folly of her exs. " portly means fat, why it is used to describe smirk.

Perhaps the writer is trying to suggest the "smirk" was obvious or excessive and that she was overly enjoying the discomfort of her exs (husbands/boyfriends?)
