Please help me to express this more elegantly 四十年前に日本語　を　べんきょうしました。語学区をそつぎょうしてから　日本え行った、日本語を話したことがありません。それからわすれました。 In case this is so badly constructed as to be incomprehensible, what I am trying to say is: Forty years ago I studied Japanese. However, after graduating from language school I never went to Japan, nor had the opportunity to speak Japanese, so as a result have forgotten it. (All of the above is true, and I only started learning again last month, so please forgive me if I have mangled this). thanks

I would say: 40年前、日本語を勉強しておりました。しかし語学学校を卒業して以来、日本には一度も行ったことがございませんし、日本語を話す機会もございませんでした。ですので結果的に日本語を忘れてしまいました。 in hiragana: よんじゅうねんまえ、にほんごをべんきょうしておりました。しかしごがくがっこうをそつぎょうしていらい、にほんにはいちどもいったことがございませんし、にほんごをはなすきかいもございませんでした。ですので、けっかてきににほんごをわすれてしまいました。 *Please remember that this is "my version" and there are other ways to say.
