You might find "The Middleman and Other Stories" by Bharati Mukherjee interesting, it is about immigrant experiences in North America.

I suggest starting easy: with short stories, not novels. Here's a VERY short one, but a real classic--a cultural universal in the United States. The Princess and the Pea, by Hans Christian Andersen http://hca.gilead.org.il/princess.html Try this one: "A Sound of Thunder," by Ray Bradbury: http://www.rivermill-academy.org/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=22839533

Pues, todo depende de tus gustos. No sé que tipo de libros te gustan leer. Si te gustan las poesis, te sugiero que lees algo de Shakespear: http://www.poemhunter.com/william-shakespeare/ However if you love stories. I recommend you: Nothing lasts forever - Sidney Sheldon Shirley - Charlota Bronte J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter (all parts)

Try to look for a simplified edition. These respect the reader's level. I know that Penguin books do these. They are graded (level 1-6 I think). Try to look into it. If it's your first book to read, a simplified version might be better for you.
