"Jaki jest pana/pani zawód?" Is this question natural?
My phrasebook translates "Jaki jest pana/pani zawód?" as "What is your occupation?" However, in American English this sounds very formal, the way a police officer would speak to someone. For Americans it is more natural/common to ask simply, "What do you do?" The answer can include anything, such as "I'm a student," "I'm a housewife," "I volunteer at the local hospital" -- which are not technically "professions."
