Shang Wei
how can i break down the gap of culture between Western and Eastern ?? i'm from Taiwan , i lived in Ireland for a while .Recently, i realized one thing to make me feel troublesome .no matter i try hard to communicate with local or European but it quite difficult to involve they subject as well .on the other hand ,i also notice in language school teachers always be passion and patient about what you say , but when you make friends with English native speaker they aren't always interesting in what you are talking about .so how could i involve their group easier or maybe just my English isn't good enough?!

trust me, there is NO way to break down the gap of culture between Western and Eastern. But ur problem doesn't come from here. It is because u have almost no common things to communicate. What u should do is to find something that they care about, some news, some TV shows etc.

I often ask myself this question, Shang Wei, since I often teach students from Asia and try to understand the cultural differences between us. I think Western people tend to have more boundaries with regard to some topics and personal information when they first meet someone. It's better to talk about very "light" topics at first, as Valerie said, TV shows, books and movies are a good start. Additionally, if you watch movies or TV shows in English you might also learn good words and phrases to help you communicate and maybe learn something about culture too!

I think it helps to find a common interest. For example, a TV show or hobby you both like. You could also ask them a lot of questions, Westerners love talking about themselves... ^^ Hope this helps!
