what does "I made a career out of doing better" mean exactly? I haven't more comprehensible context right now, but i thought it might mean something like "to do better". I'm not sure though. Thanks in advance.

You are correct. In this context, it is used to signify the person's employment - the person made a career (created a job for themselves) out of doing better (by doing better, by making improvements)
