Periodo Ipotetico Good evening everyone, I have a midterm exam tomorrow, so i can really use your help. I know I can say, "Se non fossi stanco, lavorerei ancora." but can I say, "Se non fossi stato stanco, lavorerei ancora."? if not, then i'd love to know why not. any comments and answers will be appreciated, Thank you all!

«Se non fossi (congiuntivo imperfetto) stanco, lavorerei (condizionale presente) ancora.» Both actions happen in the present. «Se non fossi stato (congiuntivo trapassato) stanco, avrei lavorato (condizionale passato) ancora.» Both actions are happened in the past. In that sentence, it would make no sense, but you can also have an action in the past with its hypothetical effect in the present: «Se ieri non avessi superato l'esame, oggi dovrei ancora studiare.» ... against: «Se non avessi superato l'esame, avrei dovuto studiare ancora.» (past) «Se non superassi l'esame, dovrei studiare ancora.» (present/future) In bocca al lupo! ;-)

You can't because you have to change the verb in the main sentence: "Se non fossi stato stanco, AVREI LAVORATO ancora" "Se non fossi stanco, LAVOREREI ancora" Look at the difference ^^
