understatement "the master of understatement" in this sentence somehow means "the master of moderation and unification" to me. Am I right? "The style and skill of each story varies depending on the artist involved, but Pekar is the master of understatement and has never wallowed in cheap sentiment, although he has enjoyed projecting the image of a working-class intellectual."

I'm not sure what you mean by unification, but usually saying someone is a master of understatement means that they are not flashy or showy.
