Hiragana or katakana for reading? Or both? I want to start reading Japanese but I am unsure how far my language education has to go before I am able to read basic articles.

Start learning Hiragana first. Katakana and hiragana have the same pronunciation but katakana is used for proper names, places, and things. (ex. a person's name like Mr. Sato, a location like California, an object like camera or computer). Learning how to read is one thing and knowing what you just read is another. Good luck Abigail!
