Maybe more important to disliking Americans, however, was the the fact that the government (political bosses) seemed to be destroying basic American values as self-reliance and competition. Self-reliance means reliance on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others. My paragraph should be slightly easier to understand, if not let me know which part you don't get.
