is "I want to improve Portuguese" correct? I read this in the profile of a person who messaged me to talk about her work as a missionary. That sentence sounds to me as if she wants to improve the Portuguese language. Am I wrong? Isn't it necessary to say "my Portuguese"?

Yes you are right! If you don't put the "my" before it will sound like she wants to improve Portuguese as a language and not her own skill of it! Do message and correct her, it could be a nice conversation starter :) Hope I helped! -Sasha
