The expressoin I don't understand. "I'll tell you what. For the rest of our lives, I'll be careful, until told otherwise." What does this sentence mean?

It sounds like the speaker said or did something to offend the other person. The other person then replied something like "you should be more careful!" The speaker then is sorry that he (or she) offended the other person and promises to be careful until the other person says it's ok.
