I've studied Arabic 1 year in university, and at my school, we learned MSA (الفصحى) as well as the Egyptian accent (المصريّ) at the same time. I enjoy learning both. It's nice being able to read, and it's also nice being able to understand what people are saying when they talk to me.

It depends on what you wish to do with it. -If you want to read Arabic literature then you want to learn MSA Arabic. -If you want to communicate with Arabic speaking people, you can do that with MSA, but learning the accent of the desired country is better and faster. -If you want access to Arabic culture then you are better off starting with MSA then moving to any accent you want (that would be very easy once you learn MSA).
