why use "would pity" nor "pitied" As a matter of fact, I pitied her sincerely, as I would pity a child of my own. why use "would pity" nor "pitied"?

'Would pity' is a rhetorical suggestion. It means (or at least implies) that the speaker does not in fact have a child, but is guessing the depth of pity that they would give to a child if they did have one.
