Like is a direct comparison: "an apple is like a pear: they are both fruit" As compares indirectly through an adjective: "an apple is as tasty as a pear" These are the main differences when making comparisons, but like and as also have very different meanings ("I like you a lot", "as far as I know") which are unrelated
