I would say "I usually wear shoes when I go out". I would say "I usually wear formal shoes when I go out" if I wanted to specify that they are formal shoes, and not any other footwear. People wouldn't often say 'I usually wear a pair of shoes when I go out' as it may suggest that sometimes it's not a pair that are worn, but only one shoe.
