He’s a media star in other countries and attracts standing-room-only audiences wherever he speaks here, but his appearances on American television are few and far between. It is a colorful way of saying that his opinions are controversial. In other words, his opinions are not within the acceptable range!

his opinions are not within the acceptable range, but it is a very convoluted way of saying it, you would never really hear a native speaker just talking like this, at lest not where I am from.
