difference between institute and institution ? Which one should I choose here: institutes or institutions? When should I use 'institute' and when should I use the other? Many news media are controlled by powerful institutions / institutes including the government, which cause the journalists to report news tendentiously, representing the viewpoint of the government rather than the public.

use institutions it is plural for one thing and you are talking about many rather then one, if you where talking about just one institute could be more appropriate.
