How different is 'cité' from 'ville'?

Not many people use "cité", I think, except for maybe the suburbs in France... Or it is used in expressions like "cité universitaire". Vous rencontrerez aussi le mot « cité » en français pour désigner une ville fortifiée : la Cité de Carcassonne = ville fortifiée de Carcassonne la Cité de Saint-Malo = la ville intra-muros de Saint-Malo.
