I want to understand the grammatik of the sentence Heute müsste ich nicht in die Stadt fahren.Aber ich fahre trotzdem in die Stadt. Why is "müsste" used here instead of "muss" ?

"müsste" = subjunctive II The meaning of this sentence is that it is not necessary to go to town, but nevertheless, the person once to go to town.
