In the USA: Is shoesalesman really such a hatred and low-payed job? I'm a huge fan of the Married... With Children series. As you might know, Al Bundy is a shoesalesman and quite always there are jokes being made about his job. That even a paperboy or dishwasher receives more per day than a shoesalesman and you need absolutely no experience or training to be in this job. So far about the series but how is the situation in the USA really? Is it really like that and thats why the jokes about the shoesalesman Al Bundy are that hilarious? In Germany if you go into a shoestore, also a woman need to pick the shoes and test them herself before buying them. The seller himself (mostly herself) is just the cashier at the end of the store but no one would come and try to put the shoes to your feet and sell them to you this way. So in the USA is this job like the one in the series or completely different than what is shown there? Thank you very much!

There are shoe salesmen who work in very nice luxury shops that make pretty good money, but there are not a lot of jobs like that. Most shoe salesmen work in retail shops at the mall and similar. It is not a job that is well thought of or pays well, but it is hardly a job that people go around disparaging frequently. I think the problem for poor Al was that he was too old to still be having a job so menial. That and he hated feet! But mainly I think that the writers of the show were probably trying to avoid offending a lot of people so they chose a job that very few people actually have and in which the majority of people who do that job do not think of it as a career but rather a temporary employment.

@Arwa: The problem for Al Bundy in the series was that he was a shoesalesman but for women's shoes only and mostly the only customers were really fat women Al hates very much. :) You are not surprising me with the fact that you are a shoe addicts, I mean you are a young woman, so which woman is not like that? :D

Seductive question! At least for me as I'm a shoe addict :) I don't mind working as a shoesaleswoman:D I used to make a shoe contact before any eye contact but I got rid of this bad habit. Well, not really ;)
