ある/いる means "there is/are". It needs に(place marker). There is a pen on the desk. As for on the desk, there is a pen there. There is a cat on the sofa. As for on the sofa, there is a cat there. =As for on me, there is a dream there.=I have a dream.=私は夢を持<も>っています。 =As for on me, there is an older/elder brother there.=I have an older/elder brother.=私は兄を持っています。 ※Some people say "私は兄がいます。". But it's an abbreviation of "私には兄がいます。". Grammatically, it should be "私には兄がいます。".
