Will learning Chinese also benefit me learning Japanese? I'm currently taking an intro Chinese level course at my university. While Chinese is interesting, I would say I have more interest in Japanese. Unfortunately I do not have the time (due to my schedule and wanting to graduate on time) to take Japanese the following semester (my major only requires two semesters of the same language). I am interested in pursuing Japanese in my leisure time, so I was wondering if there is any benefit I can apply to Japanese from learning Chinese.

Yes since Japanese is derived from Chinese. Some nouns are the same in both language. I did not learn Japanese before but I can recognize some of the words based on my Chinese. I will said that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are all related to certain degree.

The only thing that I can think of off of the top of my head is that both Chinese and Japanese use kanji, so if you've learned to write without pinyin in Chinese, you can use that knowledge to give you an advantage in learning kanji in Japanese.
