Here's the explanation from wikipedia translated to English: "Sköterska" denotes a person with any kind of ministering task or similar profession. It is an informal occupational title. The term "sköterska" should not be confused with a protected professional title. The latter are protected by the law (1998: 531) on professional activity in the health field. In addition, the protected professional titles requires that the person that shall exercise the profession has a formal and official training approved by an administrative authority and has in some cases even had a formal license issued. Occasionally, the term "sköterska" is used as a short form for "sjuksköterska", although this is not entirely correct. In compositions it is common to speak of "narkossköterska" (anesthesia nurse), "IVA-sköterska" (ICU nurse), "KOL-sköterska" (COPD nurse), "BVC-sköterska" (pediatric clinic nurse) or "skolsköterska" (school nurse), although "narkossjuksköterska" (anesthesiologist nurse) and so on are more correct to say. The word "sköterska" should not be confused with "skötare" (attendant) who is an official description of staff in areas such as psychiatry).
