Proprio/a I understand that the word PROPRIO/A means exactly, precisely, really and truly. However, the word confuses me somewhat when used in sentences. In this example... "Spendere le proprie energie per una buona causa, spendere la propria credibilità ecc.." ...what does PROPRIO mean here? Does it become part of the following word, sort of, giving the word more meaning, more emphasis?

1) Soltanto /proprio/ significa /exactly/, ed essendo (being) un avverbio non si declina. Esempi: - e` proprio lei! (referred to a /she/, it keeps the 'o' form) - e` proprio il mio amico Giulio! - e` proprio quella cosa che hai detto tu. 2) /proprio/ esiste anche come aggettivo, {proprio, propri, propria, proprie} e significa appartenenza (quality of 'belonging') in aggiunta o in sostituzione di /suo, suoi, .../. Esempio: -- ha dovuto vendere la sua propria casa perche` continuava a giocare a poker e perdeva. -- ha dovuto vendere la propria casa ... -- e dopo il lungo viaggio fatto insieme ciascuno torno` alla propria dimora (each to his own house) dimora: a rare but good sounding (in fables, etc.) for /home/ L'origine e` la parola /proprieta`/
