If the subjects of those two sentences are "I", the both have same meaning, but: 彼は私の古い車を売りました。= He sold **my** old car. 彼は自分の古い車を売りました。= He sold **his (own)** old car. = 彼は彼の古い車を売りました。 私の means always "my", and 自分の means "one's own".
