Could someone tell me what is the meaning of..... Could someone tell me what is the meaning of this quotation "I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter."~James Michener?

I understand it to mean that Michener's first ideas might not be very good or creative, but he makes those ideas better each time he rewrites his drafts.

Perhaps it means that he is better at improving somebody else's texts. To rewrite is to write again in order to improve.
