Honne are the thoughts that you really wanna say but you can't say them. Otherwise people get uncomfortable or angry. "Wow that shirt looks really good on you!." but you are thinking "That is the ugliest shirt I've ever seen..." Or let's say you fall in love with someone you know but he knows you are going out with his friend. You really wanna ask him out, but you can't, caz you think he'd think that you are a slut. Tatemae is "Wow that shirt looks really good on you!" I'm not a teacher so you should look for the details.

Many Japanese,(Especially in the work, even between friends)The feeling isn't expressed straight.Because the reason does not want to worsen the atmosphere of the place or many Japanese match oneself with the person of the circumference. It is a sometimes good thing. However , it has also a cowardly because some people later speak ill. "Honne"=The plain feeling and idea "Tatemae"=The remark that klled their feelings and a true thought Many Japanese respect the harmony with the circumference. However , it will also lead to stress!!
