Hello Harry! Consequence defined is a result or effect of an action or condition. Outcome defined is the way a thing turns out; a consequence. Source: Dictionary Oxford. Consequence and outcome both conceptualize what comes after an action or event, yes they are similar but they are very different. Do you understand the concept of connotation in language? Connotation is an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to it definition. If you do not fully understand the concept of connotation and its use in the English language I strongly suggest you read English Poetry. I can send you suggestions if you would like. Outcome is a very technical word, a little formal even. The connotation with outcome is a result of its frequent use in technical settings. It is common for doctors and research scientists to use the word outcome. Consequence has a negative connotation attached to it. Example. A doctor would likely say "The outcome of a good diet and exercise will be weight loss" it is unlikely that a doctor would say "The consequence of a good diet will be weight loss". A doctor would likely say "lung cancer is a consequence of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day." A doctor using the word outcome is this sentience is least likely. Note that... Consequence is countable, of something, for somebody or something as result of something that has happened. Outcome is the result or effect of an action or event.

They have very similar meanings, but generally a "consequence" refers to a negative result, and "outcome" by itself can refer to either a positive or negative result. If you would like to give it a positive connotation you can also say "positive outcome." Hope this helps! :)
