Tips on getting your tones correct! Sometimes I know how to say something, but I get nervous right before I ask the Chinese person, and I totally forget my tones and know I pronounce it wrong. Sometimes, I feel as though I say it correct, but they still don't understand. When they finally understand and repeat it, I feel like what they say is exactly the same as what I said! Any tips on helping me remember my tones, or tips for better pronunciation?

From what you said, I feel like your Chinese is very good as a foreigner. And you just need to have more conversations in Chinese, and nervous is totally a common feeling we feel when we speak foreign language, but I think as you practice it more often, you will get more familiar with Chinese, and you don't feel stress with something you're familiar with. You will get over it, I'm working on it too.

yes, I guess everyone has experienced exact same thing. my personal tip on this , get yourself some original pronunciation record from local person, speak it very very loudly, better like yelling(without bothering anyone). yelling get you mileage quicker also help to built confidence than speaking in normal way. Because I am afraid that people don't understand me.once I have yell it before,Ok,it's not that hard, even I didn't get the right pronunciation. and about mindset,I start speaking English by make friends with some foreign guys who stick around in local, they speak a little Chinese,I thought we are same beginners, aren't we? I am pretty sure they didn't do better than me, why can't I Just performed like them. Hopes My lousy English won't confuse you

Unless you're having an extended conversation, I'll suggest using fanyi.baidu.com, which has both the characters and the audio; it works both for learning pronunciation and for communicating the odd question or two. You have to prepare a listener for the context of what you are going to ask. I have spoken with good pronunciation to folks who thought I was speaking some strange foreign tongue; they look around helplessly; whereupon I ask them "你可以讲普通话吗? "; then everything that follows is perfectly clear, correct tones or not.
