In Japanese are there words that you would speak but, not write down? For example I heard that you can say "kedo" (けど) but you are not supposed to use it in written Japanese. Is this true? Thanks!

Yes, it's true. We don't use "けど" as a written language or in a formal situation, but we tend to use a lot in a daily conversation, so iif you don't have to be polite, then I personaly think it's alright to use "kedo". 「けど」は書きことばではないですね。したよ(yo) "yo"も書かないです。Does it make sense? Sorry If i missed the point.
