"Escuché una voz en la noche" -->> El verbo "escuchar" implica que el sujeto hace la acción voluntaria de percibir un sonido. La traducción al inglés es: "listen to".
"Oí una voz en la noche" -->> El verbo "oír" NO implica que el sujeto hace la acción voluntaria sino que percibe el sonido sin intención. La traducción al inglés es: "hear".

"Oí una voz en la noche", It means you heard it which sounds more natural in this sentence.
