Can the environment affect your ability to learn multiple languages?

Some researchers argue that exposure to multiple languages at an early age (from birth to 8 years old) develops the child’s brain in such a way that when s/he grows up they will have better language acquisition abilities than children who grew up learning only one language. A common example given is that there are more Europeans who can speak multiple languages than US Americans, and a European often has an easier time learning a foreign language such as English than an American would learning, say, French or German. Researchers believe that European brains are just better wired to pick up a second, third, or even forth language because they tend to grow up in a multi-language environment (in the case of Switzerland, grocery store product labels are printed in up to four languages).

I am curious to know if people here believe in this theory -- can exposure to multiple languages at an early age really improve your ability to learn new languages later on in life?

For learning: English
Base language: English

That's for sure, I guess. I don't know how to explain, but I'd like to make it short. You can imagine that when a baby learns a language ( his/her native language) by hearing the others around him, and then imitating the sound. Thanks to that, he can speak a language though he can't read or write yet. That's the time when a baby is exposed to a language. It happens the same way to foreign languages. Therefore, I think exposure to multiple languages at an early age can really improve their ability to learn new languages later on in life. I hope my English is not so confusing to you.

this depend of the ambition of this person , but often the ambition affect to the Out-effects arround the environment.., so the kids who learned more tongue is the better to improve them languages and learn more .. i learned english since i was young ( since i was 6 years old ) and now i'm better in english moreover my mother tongue Arabic ..but i see that if i learned other languages when i was young i must be better than now , it's so easy to recover my information , instead of entry new information.
now if u wanna know that learning languages since early age it develop our brains to getting more in in the future i agree with u , but it depend about ur abilities , specially the memory of u ,..
Remember that talents differ from one and other, but it can develop the skills of the kids to be better in the future than now but all with respect to himself.....

In my opinion, the answer entails more than one factor.
    -Genetics
    -Exposure in early childhood
    -Mother tongue structure
-Importance given by the immediate environment
-Personality formation and type (communication, traits and skills)
The above factors contribute to the ability and end quality of learning a language.
population and demographics. if you want to learn a language but no one is around to help you, you're on your own, buddy.

Of course, i think learning english should be early.

When we are very young, we don't inform our thought, we can accept new things better, and when we are a little older, we refused to accpet new things.
    Hi,
I have no doubt about the truth of that theory .People should start learning foreign languages from their earlier childhood to pick up the language better. The earlier time they start the best perform they will get.I can tell you my own experience when I first came to Czech I was 10 years old that time and my brother was 6 years old.I had to learn very much to be fluent in Czech while my brother didn´t learn at all,he was always so lazy to stay at home and learn some vocabularies.I scare of that and also had a bad felling that my brother will get some problems with his school but he didn´t.A few years later he became smarter than me.now I would say my brother speaks Czech more naturally than me .

So the earlier time they start the better they will be.And of course the environment of multi languages can help you really much to pick up a foreign language. You see the words several times ,you hear some another languages and for that It´s easier for you to remember that word, especially when you see or hear that word somewhere out of your book.Like to learn a new word with picture is for easier than just to open the book and learn it.

I am not American so I actually don´t know the real reason of them not to learn another foreign languages as much as Europeans. But I think whenever we want to do something we should find ourself the biggest ambition. So Americans or another English people don´t have that big ambition as much as people from another countries have. They speak English and It´s might enough for them .In fact almost everyone is able to communicate in English so they might not into another language.

Here apart from English or German to chose another foreign language at school is an obligation.I wouldn´t say it´s the same in the US and in Uk ,huh?
So then the age when you start leaning a foreign language, your own ambition, the environment and the feeling of being forced are those things i find the most important of learning a foreign languages.

i think it is, you know when we are yong i stay in china, so i learn chinese and i can di it better than anyone in the other country, and you are in other country you are familiar with some other languagesm and that result from the place where you are, the environment really helps a lot to learn, and espexcially to learn a new kind of languages,it could help us to learn the way others thinking, the special culture!

I do believe in this research result. And I have a friend in Australia and her mother is from Taiwan and her dad is from Algeria. The girl can speak 3 languages at the moment.

Really i don't know what can the children from birth to 8 years old understand in the multiple languages environment? This is the first step to discover the world outlook and also is the time children need the most special care from parent. Children's brain has not yet developed enought to receive the mish-mash sounds in the short time. multiple languages are just the same the mish-mash sounds make them be stressed easily. People say this is the language confused trouble in the children. as i know the speaking skill of those children is slower than others.
all things will be better if they are put on the right place and on time. the children's language ability will be better in the good environment such as multiple language but must sure TIMELY...
    JUST MY THOUGHT...^.^
