can anyone tell me what the yao is for this sentance please

Wo xiang yao yi jian danren fangjian.

I understand yi jian is the measure word and the sentance means in english I would like a single room? but what is the significance of the yao? Thanks.

Additional Details:

In the book I'm reading xiang is 'would like to' but I guess it is similar to want but never the less your answer solves my problem so thank you very much!

    if the word 'yao' means 幺(4th tone) it implies "one" or "single". in your sentence, 'yao' could not mean 'to like' as it is preceded by the word 'xiang' (想)which means 'to want'.
