Does a native English speaker in your country feel shy to talk to a local native person in the local language? No way!! They shout out the funny words with weird pronunciations (they really enjoy it)... and then make fun of their own mistakes, shake hand with the local native speaker , pat on his back....and walk away nonchalantly with his head held high. So if a native English speaker doesn't feel shy to try out the local language with a local native speaker..... why should you feel shy to talk to a native English speaker in English???? Why should you worry about "losing face" etc?? It's just a psychological problem. Nothing more..nothing less!! Perhaps you are too conscious about your English knowledge and trying to prove the "strength of your vocab" to him/her. Plz don't do that..... English is just like any other language in the world....just another tool for communication. After all, that's the purpose of any language. Nothing special in English. In the end, it's your attitude that matters most ..... certainly not your vocabulary or your grammar!! You should enrich your vocabulary from your environment .... not from a dictionary!! If you can keep your eyes and ears open and keen on English, you will keep collecting hundreds of new words and phrases from the world around you. That, indeed, is the most natural process of "language assimilation". .... Remember, that's exactly how you learned your own native language when you were just a kid!! If you always worry about "right word" and "wrong word" ... well, I wonder if you can ever be a Natural Speaker of English !!

not at all..on contary,I feel shy and uncomfortable to talk with chinese in english.I'd rather talk with english-speaking friends .I know they will be patient about what I say,and they also will understand why I can not use correct words .they just let me talk and talk...and I feel fine in front of them.however,it is not easy for me to open my mouth to speak english when I am with chinese guys, beacause I think they will laugh at me and regard me as a loser of speaking english.yeah, sometimes it is true ,cuz i have heard about someone who criticised others' pronunciation, which made me think in that way:I will be laugh at by them as well..ok,do not think too much when you talk,if not,you will never make youself understanded

The English language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, second only to Mandarin. That English is used almost everywhere is only one of the many advantages of learning the language.
